How To Test a Brain Supplement on Yourself Without Fooling Yourself

Memory is a terrible judge of memory. Here is a protocol that works around that.

You buy a supplement, take it for a few weeks, and try to work out whether it did anything. Almost everyone gets this wrong, and the reason is not stupidity — it is that the thing you are trying to measure is the same thing you are measuring with.

Here is a protocol that works around the worst of it. It costs nothing and takes about two minutes a week.

Why the obvious approach fails

You cannot remember how last month felt. Asking yourself whether your memory is better than it was six weeks ago requires the memory you are trying to assess. This is the central problem and it defeats almost everyone.

You spent money. Nobody wants to have wasted $294. That pressure is real and it is not something you can just decide to ignore.

You changed more than one thing. Most people start a supplement during a burst of general effort — better sleep, more walking, less alcohol. Any of those could produce the change you are attributing to the capsule.

Attention follows expectation. Once you are watching for sharper recall, you notice every time you remember something and forget every time you do not.

The protocol

  1. Write a baseline before the first capsule. Three or four sentences on how the last month felt. Be specific: how often you lost a word, whether you re-read paragraphs, how afternoons went. Date it. This is the single most important step and it takes five minutes.
  2. Pick two things you can count. Not feelings. Countable things — how many times a week you walked into a room and forgot why, or whether you finished the crossword. Anything you can put a number on.
  3. Change nothing else for the trial. Same sleep, same exercise, same coffee, same medicines. If you want to fix your sleep too, do it before or after, not during.
  4. Run it for six to eight weeks. Non-stimulant supplements do not work in a week. This also fits inside a 60-day guarantee window if you start counting from delivery.
  5. Write one line a week. Same day each week, before you re-read anything you wrote earlier. Thirty seconds.
  6. Read your baseline at the end, not before. Then compare. The gap between what you wrote at the start and what you now remember writing is usually the most informative part of the whole exercise.

What a real result looks like

Modest and specific. "I used to lose a word in conversation most days and now it is a couple of times a week" is a real observation. "I feel sharper" is not, because you would feel sharper anyway after spending money on feeling sharper.

Also worth knowing: no result is the most common outcome, and it is a perfectly good one. It tells you to stop spending money on this and put the effort somewhere with better evidence.

Before you start, do the safety check

None of this matters if the product is not safe with your medicines. Take the full ingredient list to a pharmacist before your first capsule, particularly if you take anything for diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol or blood clotting.

Ingredients like berberine and fucoidan have real interactions that are easy to check in advance and unpleasant to discover afterwards. Our safety page works through a full formula flag by flag.
