The 9-Point Checklist for Buying Any Brain Supplement

This category is full of products that look identical from the outside: same price bands, same bottle photography, same testimonials, same 60-day guarantee. Here is how to tell them apart in about five minutes.

1. Does the label publish milligram amounts per ingredient?

Everything else depends on this. If the label lists ingredients without amounts, or gives one total for a proprietary blend, you cannot evaluate the product and neither can anyone else.

Ask the seller for a full supplement facts panel before you order. A company with nothing to hide sends it in a minute. A vague answer is your answer.

2. Do those amounts match the research doses?

Search each headline ingredient plus the word dose. Compare. berberine is studied at 900 to 1500mg a day. Morosil at 400mg. saffron extract at 28 to 30mg. If the label says less than a tenth of the research figure, the research does not apply.

3. How many ingredients are actually active?

Sweeteners, carriers and flow agents such as xylitol get counted in ingredient totals. Subtract them. Nine actives plus a carrier is a fairer description than ten-in-one.

4. What does it interact with?

Search each ingredient plus the word interactions. Then take the list to a pharmacist. Blood thinners, diabetes medicine, statins, antidepressants and thyroid medicine are the common flashpoints. Two minutes of searching prevents most problems in this category.

5. Are there several ingredients doing the same thing?

A formula with four separate blood-sugar-lowering ingredients stacks that effect. Individually mild, together not necessarily. This matters most if you already take medicine that does the same job.

6. Is there a trial of the finished product?

Almost never, in this category. But the question is worth asking, because a product with even one small trial is in a different class from a product with an ingredient list and a story.

7. What exactly does the guarantee cover?

Four things decide whether a refund window is worth anything: when it starts, whether opened bottles are accepted, who pays return postage, and whether you need a return authorisation first. Get all four in writing before you pay, and screenshot the page.

8. Is there a repeat shipment hidden in the checkout?

Read the order page properly and look for pre-ticked boxes. Screenshot the final page before confirming. This is where surprise charges are added, not on the sales page.

9. Does the marketing make medical claims?

If a page suggests a supplement treats, prevents or reverses a disease — dementia, diabetes, anything — that is a legal problem for the seller and a warning sign for you. The FDA publishes guidance on exactly these red flags.

Invented mechanism names are a softer version of the same thing. If a formula group is named after a process with no published human research behind it, treat that section as marketing.

And keep the whole category in proportion. Sleep, physical activity, blood pressure control, hearing tests and treating depression all have stronger evidence for cognitive health than anything sold in a bottle.
